Last year my student loans were sold from the Department of Education to Nelnet. The interest paid at the time shows over $44,000 due to it switching. Can i claim it?

Yes and no. That counts as interest paid by you, so it is deductible.  But, You may only  deduct the lesser of $2,500 or the amount of interest you actually paid during the year.
