If I have a full ride scholarship (come out of pocket for nothing) do I still need to say that I was a student?

Yes, you can still say that you are a student. You wouldn't be able to claim any Education Credits if you didn't pay for  any qualifying expenses.

However, if your full ride scholarship includes Room and Board (non-qualifying expenses) you may actually have income to report from your scholarship.

If your 1098-t shows a scholarship amount in box 5 that is greater than the tuition shown in box 1 or box 2, you may be liable for tax on the difference.
