I received taxed free education assistance from my job on 12/30/16 the funds were for school that started in 1/ 2017. Do I claim this money on my 2016 or 2017 taxes?

If you received TAX FREE tuition assistance you will not report it on a tax return at all since it is a TAX FREE perk.

When you are going to school you do have to include that you recieved Employer Provided Assistance for school this way Turbo Tax knows how much they can give you for tution credit.

In the education section enter the benefits in the year the assistance was meant to pay so it belongs on 2017.
