If taken at an accredited school, the cost of the course may by eligible for the American opportunity or lifetime learning credit.  Please see https://www.irs.gov/individuals/education-credits-aotc-llc for more information.  You can see if your college is accredited here:  https://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/

If your course is not eligible for either credit, there may be other potential deductions available to you, depending on why you took the course.

Note:  Deductions are only available in the year that you paid the expense.  You will not be able to claim a deduction for this in a later year.

Were you starting a new business venture?  If so, you will take this deduction on Schedule C (Profit or Loss from Business (Sole Proprietorship)), even if you had no income during 2016.  (You will need TurboTax self-employed if you use the online version).

Was this course required for your employment?  If so, see below:

Expenses directly related to employment may be deductible as job-related expenses.  Unreimbursed job-related expenses are deductible on Schedule A (Itemized Deductions) and are subject to the 2% floor for miscellaneous itemized deductions.  To input your job-related expenses (TurboTax Deluxe edition or higher is required to file itemized deductions):
