Yes, if your student attended an eligible education institution, the course will qualify for a TAX CREDIT and your student should receive a 1098-T.  (It may not yet be available or it may only be available online, so check with your school.)

An eligible educational institution is a school offering higher education beyond high school. It is any college, university, trade school, or other post secondary educational institution eligible to participate in a student aid program run by the U.S. Department of Education. This includes most accredited post-secondary schools.

If you aren’t sure if your school is an eligible educational institution, ask them.

To get to the correct location to enter your actual tuition paid, follow the steps below:

  • Choose Federal on the left
  • Then click on Deductions & Credits at the top
  • Scroll down to see All Tax Breaks
  • Choose Education and Show More
  • Start or Revisit Expenses and Scholarships
  • Continue through the interview to your 1098-T.  Underneath the Box 2 amount is a blue link that says "What if this is not what I paid my school?"  Click on the link and it will expand and allow you to enter the actual amount you paid.
