You have to claim your son as a dependent to be able to claim any education credits.

If your son did not file as a dependent of another, he would have to amend his return to make it that way before you could claim him and the education credit.

Filing my taxes independently this year, but last year I was a dependent. Can my parents claim my 1098-T if they paid for my tuition when I was still a dependent?
