Are you being claimed as a dependent or are you using the Married Filing Separately filing status ?
If you are claimed as a dependent on someone else's return, or if you are married and filing as married filing separate, then none of your education expenses are deductible. If the former, then your parent's claim the education expenses.
I am filing married joint return and have not been anyone’s dependent and it still won’t let me enter tuition it only lets me enter books.
If you see your school listed with a $0, follow these steps to enter your current year data:
If you still cannot edit the data or you cannot get to the Education Summary screen, follow these additional steps:
This should clear the section out entirely and let you start fresh.
What if you are using TurboTax installed on a computer, not the online version of TurboTax? Where is the Tax Tools found?
The following steps should work whether you are using TurboTax Online or one of the TurboTax CD/downloaded versions.
Start by going to the Education section of your return using these steps:
Then, if you are not prompted to enter your 1098-T, go through the entire education expenses section of your return until you reach the screen titled “Your Education Expenses Summary”, then follow these steps:
You also asked about where to find Tax Tools for the CD/downloaded version of TurboTax. There is a Tools menu at the top of the screen, but it is not necessarily the same thing as the Tax Tools option in the online version. For the purposes of using Tax Tools to delete a form, this is done in the CD/downloaded version by going to the Forms tab in the corner of the screen, then highlighting the specific form in the list and clicking Delete at the bottom of the page.
