Should file as self employed even though I stopped operating my business at the beginning of this year? I still have inventory & equipment that I would like to write off.

You can file as self-employed so that you report the disposition of your inventory and assets and report the loss. You do not have to have income or still be operating the business report "shutting down" your business.
