Check your router

If you can't access the Internet, download TurboTax software, or use features in TurboTax that require an Internet connection, your router might be the issue.

TurboTax is tested with a number of routers to ensure compatibility. However, we're unable to test every router or provide instructions on how to set them up. If you need additional help, visit your router manufacturer's website.

If you use a digital subscriber line (DSL), adjusting your router's MTU setting to 1492 may resolve connectivity issues.

  1. Select Start.
  2. In the Start Search field, type ping -l 1472 -f (use lowercase letters: the letter after the first hyphen (-) is a lowercase L).

If the Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set message appears in the window, set your router's MTU to 1492.

For more information or detailed instructions about changing your router's MTU setting, consult your router's manual or contact your internet service provider.

Your router manufacturer's website provides procedures to update your firmware. Netgear and Linksys are two popular router manufacturers.

If you're using Windows 7 with a Linksys router, you might need to update your router. Search the Linksys Support site for further help.
