unemplyoment changes

I filed before the Relief bill passed. Both me and my wife had over $10,200 in unemployment income. I heard the news NOT to amend, the IRS was gonna handle it. I got an email from turbotax a few hours ago saying I would need to send in an amended return because AGI changed and other credits are now available. I live in Mass, and I believe we would only be able to get it if we were under the 200% of poverty line. I believe we were at 218% so no go. I did the amended return through TT and it showed a BIG number of my federal and a $500 on my massachusetts but it looks like nothing was changed?

So I guess two questions, did I do the right thing with the federal and amending it and what's up with Mass? Do I need to file the amended return still?

The email refers to, other than the unemployment exclusion, if you qualify for any additional credits and deductions due to a lower AGI, you should amend your federal tax return.  If the only reason you amend is the unemployment exclusion, you do not need to amend.

For details from the IRS, click here:  No amendment

Per IRS, "There is no need for taxpayers to file an amended return unless the calculations make the taxpayer newly eligible for additional federal credits and deductions not already included on the original tax return."

As you go through both the Federal and State sections in TurboTax under Amendment, follow prompts.  If the lower AGI qualifies you for any additional credits or deductions, you would want to amend.  If the only change in refund or tax due is caused by the unemployment exclusion, you do not need to amend including both the federal and Massachusetts.   Click here:  https://www.mass.gov/alerts/unemployment-updates
