rejected return - what can I update

My federal (and therefore state) e-file was rejected, what can I update to re-submit?  The error is easily fixed, is that the only thing I can update, or can I make other changes to the return and not cause trouble.  (So, fix the typo I had but also change other bits in the return - where as otherwise I might have to amend the return?)

If the return is rejected, you can make any changes needed.  Essentially, it is like the IRS did not receive your return yet.
