IRS transcript says no filed taxes on file even though turbo tax shows our taxes accepted.

IRS and turbotax shows that our return should of been sent to us by March 11. IRS transcript shows no filed taxes on file and no refund received. What could be happening?

I’m having the very same issue…Can anyone answer?

IRS transcript says no filed taxes on file even though turbo tax shows our taxes accepted.

"Accepted" is an efile term that means the submitted return was in the proper format and passed some initial checks so that the IRS agreed to begin processing it; i.e. it was accepted for processing.  It doesn't have anything to do with whether a return has finished processing and a refund approved.  TurboTax gets no feedback from the IRS after an efile has been accepted for processing.  TurboTax provides a date to everyone which is an estimate based on the most common situation.

Go by the IRS refund tool.   A transcript may not show up early on unless the IRS has some transaction on it to generate one or puts some review codes on it.   Sometimes it's just unpredictable when a transcript finally shows up.   What do you see with the IRS WMR tool?

https://www.irs.gov/wheres-my-refund

What exactly does it say for the status of your refund?   Sometimes there is a message there if there's a delay, such as if the IRS is preparing to send a letter, or the IRS needs more info, such as ID verification, etc.

If the IRS WMR tool says the funds have been approved and sent and provides a date, the IRS says to allow up to 5 days for a deposit due to variations in processing procedures at different banks.  i.e., they don't want people to start calling them until after 5 days from the IRS-provided date.  (Again, don't go by the TurboTax estimate.)

Here's something else to watch out for.  It may or may not apply to you.

If you chose to pay any fees out of your Federal refund, the funds will go first from the IRS to an intermediary bank where the fees are subtracted, then that bank sends the rest on to your bank (or card) in a second direct deposit.  The company that administers that payment method is SBTPG (Santa Barbara Tax Products Group.)   If you DID use that method and if your funds have been released by the IRS, you can check on your refund at SBTPG's website, using their lookup tool:

https://www.sbtpg.com/

On that page choose the "For Taxpayers" link, then on the next page choose "Check with TPG."

If you did not use that method to pay your fees, then just ignore this paragraph.

The IRS "Where's My Refund" site doesn't normally use the word "pending."  Does it say "received" or "still being processed" or something else?

https://www.irs.gov/wheres-my-refund

It may not show up in a transcript until processing is far enough along.   It's unpredictable when it will show in a transcript.  How long has it been since you filed?

If it shows up in the IRS WMR tool, then you at least know they received it and are working on it.

If it's been longer than 21 days, you can phone the IRS, if you wish, to see if they can give you any more info about the delay.

IRS:  800-829-1040 (7AM-7 PM local time) Monday-Friday

When calling the IRS do not choose the first choice re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.

  • First choose your language.  Then listen to each menu before making the selection.
  • Then press 2 for "personal income tax".
  • Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
  • Then press 3 "for all other questions."
  • Then press 2 "for all other questions."
  • It may then ask for your SSN, but do not enter it.  Just wait.   If it asks for SSN a second time, still do not enter it.
  • Then it will get "tired", and you'll get another menu.  Choose 2 for "personal".
  • Then in the next menu choose 4 for "all other inquiries", and it should transfer you to an agent but expect a long wait.
  • I usually use a speakerphone so I can work on something else while waiting.
