It has been 72 hours since I submitted my federal return and it still shows as "transmitted", is something wrong since it has been longer than the indicated 48 hours?

Are you sure it shows as "transmitted" and not either accepted, rejected or pending?

Yes, I am sure.  It says "Federal Return Transmitted 1/30/2018" the indicator bar under does not go past this.

Where are you looking at a bar?

What shows up in this tool to check the efile status?

Are you using Online TurboTax or the cd/download software?

There has been a backlog of returns that were e-filed before the IRS began accepting and processing them on 1-29. TurboTax gives you an estimated date for receiving your refund based on a 21 day average from your date of acceptance, but it can take longer.

Once your return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control.  TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS.

To track your Federal refund:

https://www.irs.gov/refunds

To track your state refund:

https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1899433

On the IRS site you are also offered the use of an app called IRS2Go
