Is the 1040 tax extension and amended 1040 the same thing?

In basic terms, they are two VERY different tax elections.

An extension allows you file your tax return at a later date (after the 4/17/18 deadline).  It does NOT give you extra time to pay (any applicable interest & any penalty will continue to accumulate.  https://ttlc.intuit.com/replies/3301811
