If we have $0 tax liability, do refunds always get a mailed check?

No, there is no IRS protocol to change refund delivery options.

  • If you've had the same account for years, I don't know why it would change.
  • If you wish to contact the IRS, you can call toll-free at 800-829-1040

During the filing process you have an opportunity to choose a paper check, or to have your refund direct deposited to your bank account.

No. That is not accurate. I indicated direct deposit when I filed. I have had direct deposit of refunds to the same account and same routing numbers for 10+ years. The IRS changed my refund from direct deposit to a mailed check without any notification or indication of any type of error. Is there some sort of IRS protocol that automatically changes a direct deposit to a mailed check when there is a $0 tax liability? Or a refund greater than $10K?

Thank you. I received a very helpful response from another community member. Much appreciated.

My refund was delayed. Direct deposit was setup.

Afer resolution, the IRS decided to mail a paper check.

They have rules but no one to know what they are.

" mailed check when there is a $0 tax liability?"

if you're saying your tax was Zero, but your refund was over $10,000, that might trigger a paper check after review by IRS. How did that happen ??

It's Direct Deposit Reject 44.  You can find that information HERE .
