2017 taxes: filed electronically requested direct deposit for fed and state. State was Deposited into account IRS says they mailed me a check? Acct number is correct and in my name, so why the check?

Sometimes the IRS issues a check even if you have elected to have your refund directly deposited to your account. If they do so, they will offer explanation with your paper check refund.
