Do you have a TurboTax Online account?

We'll help you get started or pick up where you left off.

I received a CP12 notice that says we found an error on your 2023 Form 1040, which affects the following area of your return: Child Tax Credit/Credit for Other Dependents

They adjusted my refund from $8,725 to $3,925(-$4,800). I have three kids claimed on my 1040 all with Child Tax Credit checked. I did claim the Adoption credit this year. Could this be because of the order the credits were applied in? I get the same refund when plugging my numbers into other tax software too not just TurboTax, so it seems like this is IRS related

I received a CP12 notice that says we found an error on your 2023 Form 1040, which affects the following area of your return: Child Tax Credit/Credit for Other Dependents

Here is information about your notice.  If you don't have the corrections yet, you may be able to get your IRS Transcript with the changes they made. If you do have the numbers compare them line by line with your tax return.

  1. Nonrefundable portion of the Child Tax Credit is used to reduce your tax liability (Line 19, Form 1040)
  2. Adoption Credit - Reduces your tax dollar for dollar next (See Line 20, Form 1040)
    1. Both reduce your tax liability to zero regardless of the amount of credit
  3. Refundable Additional Child Tax Credit would be listed under payments (if you qualify, Line 28, 1040)

You can call the  number on the top of your notice and they may make adjustments if they agree with you.

  • If you disagree, contact us at the toll-free number shown on the top right corner of your notice or respond by mail to the address on your notice. If you write to us, include a copy of the notice along with your correspondence or documentation.
