I  am trying to complete my 2019 federal tax return. I already paid for the Intuit software and almost completed the return. I am unable to open the file to complete it and file it. How can I get to the incomplete 2019 tax file?

@bkbaylor Online tax preparation and e-filing for 2019 returns is now permanently closed.  You had until midnight on Thursday, October 15, 2020 to finish and attempt to e-file; if your e-file was rejected you had until October 31, 2020 to make corrections and re-file. Now it is too late to use online software or to e-file. If you have any changes/corrections at all to make to your 2019 return, you now have to complete it using desktop software, which you must download to a full PC or Mac  (not to a mobile device). Then you need to print, sign and mail it.

https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/2559403-how-do-i-finish-a-prior-year-return-that-i-started-in-turbotax-online

If you already paid for your online software you can ask customer support for a download of the desktop software.

They are available from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific time Monday-Friday.

If you are getting a refund, there is no penalty for filing late.  If you owe tax due, then file and pay the amount due as shown on the Form 1040, but expect a bill later from the IRS for the penalty and interest you will owe.  Only the IRS will calculate this—TurboTax will not calculate it.

@Sylvia1009  Didn't you see the answer right above your post?

Sorry, Online for 2019 and prior is closed now so you can not start a new 2019 or 2018 return or finish one. Online is only for 2020. Oct 15, was the last day to efile.  2019 is now the prior year.

Did you start an Online return? How to finish a prior year online return

Or How to file a prior year
https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/using-turbotax/help/how-do-i-prepare-a-prior-year-tax-return/00/25984

You can only buy the download for prior years. You have to buy a separate program for each year. They only sell the last 3 years. You need a full Windows or Mac computer to install it on. Buy the download here
https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/

You have to print and mail prior year returns. When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS received the return. Don’t forget state.

Important! Mail Federal and State in separate envelopes and mail each year in separate envelopes.

If you are getting a refund, there is not a penalty for filing past the deadline. You have 3 years to file for a refund. If you owe taxes, the interest/penalties will be calculated by the IRS based on how much you owe and when they receive your return and payment. The IRS will bill you for this; it will not be calculated by TurboTax.

If you want to file for free you can fill out the forms by hand. Here are some basic forms…..

You have to sign onto your 2019 online account using the exact same User ID you used to create the online account.

Close all TurboTax windows on your web browser (including this one).  Copy and paste the account recovery website link onto a new web browser window and run the tool.

Use this TurboTax account recovery website to get a list of all the User ID's for an email address.  Run the tool against any email addresses you may have used - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/account-recovery

If none of the user ID's received will access your 2019 account, then use the option shown in blue on the account recovery website, "

Try something else

"

If you used the desktop CD/Download editions installed on your computer, the only copy of your tax data file and any PDF's will be on the computer where the return was created.  TurboTax does not store online any returns completed using the desktop editions.

To access your prior year tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the User ID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/

Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and on the section Your tax returns & documents click on Show.  Click on the Year and Click on Download/print return (PDF)

Was your 2019 return prepared in Online TurboTax?  Any return prepared in desktop software (CD/download) will not be in an online account.

If prepared online, log in and go to the Tax Home.   If you've been working on your 2020 Online return, then it may already open on the Tax Home page.   On the Tax Home page, scroll down to the section "Your Tax Returns & Documents."  Expand that section and choose tax year 2019.  You didn't say "what kind" of tax file you wanted.   Are you referring to a PDF?   If you want a PDF, you can choose to "Download/print the PDF".  If you just need the 2019 AGI,  there should be a link to "View adjusted gross income (AGI.)"   Or are you wanting the *.tax2019 data file to use in desktop software?  If so, there is a link there to download the tax data file.

If you do all that, but there's no evidence of the 2019 returns in that section "Your Tax Returns & Documents", then you likely have multiple accounts and signed into the wrong one.    Many people end up with multiple accounts.

You can have up to 5 accounts that use the same email address for notification purposes.  A User ID may be an email address, but it doesn't have to be.  It might be only part of an email address, or it can be anything at all.

To get a list of your User IDs, reset password, and recover account access, etc., you can use the tool at the link below.  When using the Account Recovery tool, try using your phone number first if you can still access it.   After that, if necessary, then run the tool on your email address(es) you can access.

NOTE: Before running the account recovery tool below, log out of all Intuit accounts including this user forum, or you might end up in a loop.  Then clear your browser Internet cache, close your browser, then reopen it, and go to the link below.  You may wish to copy this link so you can paste it into the new browser session.

https://myturbotax.intuit.com/account-recovery

If still no luck after running that on your phone number you can still access and email address(es) that you can access,  here's another method:

Go back to the tool again, but this time leave the data field blank, scroll down a bit, then choose the small blue link that says

"Try something else"

, and it will look you up by SSN and other parameters.

This is a public Internet forum.  For your privacy/security please do not post personal info on this public bulletin board.    It looks like the forum privacy filter has removed your email addresses for your protection.

If your old email address was your User ID (it may or may not be), you may still be able to log in with that User ID.   Or are you hitting a roadblock with a verification step?   Does the log-in process prompt to email you a 6-digit verification code to log into your account?  In that case, you will indeed hit a roadblock if you no longer have that email address, unless it lets you choose your current phone number instead.

Or you can try this to sign in a different way.   After entering your User ID, and possibly getting an "I am not a robot" challenge, you will see the password field.   You can leave the password field blank and scroll down to a small link "Sign in a different way."   Then it will show you all your sign-in verification options:  email (which you say is no longer valid,) phone, etc.    If you can't use the phone method, then one of the choices there is "Confirm my account a different way."

Or if you don't have those options and are unable to log into your Online Account, you can try the Account Recovery tool.   But since you can't use the old email address, we can tell you how to use the tool on your phone number (if you still have the same phone).   And if not, I'll also tell you how to use an alternate method called

"Try Something Else"

that doesn't use the Account Recovery tool.

To get a list of your User IDs, reset password, and recover account access, etc., you can use the tool at the link below.  When using the Account Recovery tool, try using your phone number if you can still access it, since you can no longer access the email address you had previously.   If  you don't have the same phone number, you can use the

"Try Something Else"

method on that Account Recovery screen as I mention below.

If still no luck after running that on your phone number (if you can still access,) or if you don't have the same phone number, here's another method:

Go back to the tool again, but this time leave the data field blank, scroll down a bit, then choose the small blue link that says

"Try something else"

, and it will look you up by SSN and other parameters.

Once you're able to log into your account, go to the Tax Home and scroll down to the section "Your Tax Returns & Documents".  Expand that section and choose tax year 2019.   You can get a copy of the return PDF there, or if you just need the 2019 AGI, there is a link there to "View 2019 adjusted gross income (AGI.)

Also update your contact/verification email address in your Intuit Account settings, and if your User ID is the old email address, you can even change the User ID, if you wish.

Was it prepared in Online TurboTax?   If so, and if you can't find it, you may have more than one account.   NOTE:  Any return prepared in desktop software (CD/download) will not be in an online account.  Try the following first:
