I have an amended 1098 with a significantly larger amount for property taxes. The error caused a payment due to the feds. Will the feds refund me that payment?

If you have received a corrected 1098 form, you will need to file an amended return (form 1040X) to notify the IRS that your property tax amount has changed and see if it will impact your return.  Note, though, that for itemized deductions there is a $10,000 limit for state and local taxes which includes the total of property taxes plus all state income taxes withheld and reported on your federal return.
