I accidentally filed my 2020 return using the "itemize deductions" options and now I owe the IRS. It was a total error to do file this way, and now because I received unemployment benefits I am stick waiting to see what the IRS does with my return. I'm pretty sure I will still need to amend after the IRS's changes are made, but I'm fearful they will make slight changes that will not effect my amount owed, or worse I will owe more. I need to amend to file a "standard deduction" to receive a return and not owe one. I hope someone will reply with an answer for me.
Thanks & good luck to all.

Go ahead and amend. It is true that the IRS has stated not to amend for the motive of unemployment. However, that's not the reason you are amending, although it is a detail associated with the return. You are amending to correct the standard deduction. Since the unemployment issue will also be corrected, allow the program to report this as it does. Since the IRS will "automatically" correct the unemployment, the program very well may assume that the IRS is making the change and adjust the original return figures accordingly. You will be filing the additional changes, and since even an e-filed amended return still takes 12-16 weeks to process, there should be no real issues with you going ahead and doing so now.
The Turbotax website won't allow me to amend, when I click to amend, it leads me to the notice that the IRS will be taking the additional actions for those of us with unemployment benefits. Is there a work around for this that will allow me to amend? If so please provide me with a link if you can.
I appreciate your help, TakeXare!
