Receiving a refund from an amended tax return takes a long time. Usually, it takes about 3 weeks from the date you mailed the amended return for it to show up in the IRS system. It can then take up to 16 weeks to receive a refund. Before, it used to take 8 to 12 weeks for processing time before you would receive your refund, but an increase in the number of amended returns has resulted in the normal processing time to 16 weeks.

You can check the status of your Form 1040X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return using the Where's My Amended Return? online tool or by calling the toll-free telephone number 866-464-2050 three weeks after you file your amended return. Both tools are available in English and Spanish and track the status of amended returns for the current year and up to three prior years.
