Can I amend the choice of american opportunity credit of previous year?

My son attended college classes as a high schooler 4 years ago and I started to take the credit didn't realize we're only allowed for 4 years of this credit. Can I amend the choice of 2012 in order to take the credit this year? Thanks!

Unfortunately, it's too late to amend your 2012 return. The statute of limitations expires 3 years after the due date of the return, which for 2012 is 4/18/2016.
