We can’t say why you received a check. Possibly your bank rejected the direct deposit for some reason. Possibly, the IRS detected a pattern of fraud or something else of concern and decided to mail a check to the address on your tax return as being more secure.
If the check was from the IRS or the US treasury, then it is the IRS that adjusted your refund. They will send a letter of explanation in a couple of weeks.
If the check was from green dot bank or another bank not the US treasury, that means that you signed up for a refund transfer — to have TurboTax fees deducted from your refund. The refund transfer bank may have been unable to make a direct deposit, possibly your bank rejected it. And so you have received your refund minus the fee.
Also remember that your state tax refund is separate from your federal tax refund and will be paid separately.
