Amending

I finished my tax return and printed it out, but have not mailed it yet. I originally filed as 'Married, but filing separately," but then decided that Joint filing would be better. I went ahead and amended the document, which prompts me to send in a 1040-X form instead. Do I still need to send in the special form if I did not send the original in?
