Help! My husband already filed his taxes as Married Filing Separately but we should have filed jointly. His filing was already processed and we're trying to amend to add me. However, we've gotten to the very end and now TurboTax is flagging an error on the federal return. It says "1040x cannot be filed electronically if there is a change in filing status." This doesn't seem to align with what it says on the IRS website. Does anyone know if we really can't file this electronically?

Up until a few years ago the IRS did not allow an amended return to be filed electronically if it changed the filing status. Even though the IRS now allows it, TurboTax has not updated its software to allow the amended return to be filed electronically.
Thank you very much! This is really helpful to know. I guess we'll be sending in an amended paper return.
