Amend Taxes that I originally owed but now get a refund

I completed my 2022 taxes using Cash App and owed almost 4k later I found out that I should not have been taxed on a portion of my income because of the difficulty of care. So this year I used TurboTax and saw where I could check the box to exclude that portion. So now I purchased the 2022 Turbo Tax and now get a small refund. My question is will I be send back the almost 4k that I already paid plus the new refund amount? I did not see this when I was going through to amend and not sure if I missed where to enter that I paid those amounts when originally filing.

No, when you do an amended return, the program assumes you already got the original refund or paid the original tax.

If you are getting a refund, that is refunding some of the tax you paid with the original. It is not also returning the first payment.

Thank you! So how do I get a refund on what I paid and should not have paid?

You'll get the refund or overage amount when your amended return is fully process. Amending can take a long time 16-20 weeks on average. @patrrod
