Amend taxes and $0 return

I just received my 1098-T and decide to file it, so I tried to amend my taxes. (I already received my return previously from my W2) but it shows me at the end that I have a 0$ return. On one the tabs it said that I was qualified for $4000 but all I get is 0?

Can anyone help me with that please?

If you are looking at the refund monitor in the upper-left corner, it is normal for the refund amount to change to zero when you are amending the return. You will want to look at the 1040-X to see the true bottom line. Here's how to print/view a pdf of your return:

  1. Open or continue your return.
  2. Select Tax Tools in the left menu (if you don't see this, select the menu icon in the upper-left corner).
  3. With the Tax Tools menu open, you can then:
  • Select Print Center and then Print, Save, or Preview This Year's Return to preview your entire return, including all forms and worksheets (you may be asked to register or pay first).
  • View only your 1040 form by selecting Tools. Next, select View Tax Summary in the pop-up, then Preview my 1040 in the left menu.

Amend taxes and $0 return

After the completion of the steps for the amendment, I get a pdf file that has both my 1040-X and 1040, both of them mention that I have a $0 return even though it should be $4000 on my understanding. I also have negative numbers on my statement and I have no idea what they are for. I don't think there is much time left to file my taxes and I really want to get the return on my tuition fees.

Look at the form 1040X …

Column A should have the figures from the original return, Column C the corrected figures and Column B the differences between the other 2 which needs an explanation on page 2 of the form 1040X.

If you completed it correctly you will see an entry on either line 16 OR 18:

On line 16 should be the amount you paid with your original return.

On line 18 should be the amount of your original refund you received.

Then you will see your extra refund on line 22 OR  the new balance due you need to pay on line 20.

Thank you, I see what's going on. My income was bigger than my tuition fees and that's why they deducted it and got negative numbers. Due to that, I get 0 return. Thank you!
