If you were due a Federal refund when you filed the original return, it's recommended to wait on the refund to arrive first before amending.

The amended return Form 1040X and associated forms cannot be efiled.  It has to be printed, signed, dated, and mailed.   It can take the IRS up to 16 weeks to process an amended return.

It's recommended to mail by a method that has tracking such as certified return receipt, Priority Mail, etc.

If you amend your Federal return, you may need to amend the state return as well.   If you amend the state return, be sure to mail it separately to the state tax agency.
