How can I know if I took out the American Opportunity Tax Credit last year without paying for my old tax return?

You can get a Tax Return Transcript form the IRS for free.  While its not an official copy of your entire return, this type of transcript will show the line items and numbers of your return and the AOC would show as a credit if you claimed it.   You may be eligible to view it online or you can request via mail.
