Do I need to amend?

I am a student, made minimum wage last year, but I forgot to add the car sales tax I purchased 1/21/2018 for the deducations. If my taxes don't exceed the standard deducation, would it be beneficial to switch to itemized to get the car sales tax deducted for a refund?

No, if you used the Standard Deduction and the car sales tax will not make your total Itemized Deductions more than the Standard, there is no need to amend your return- the itemized deduction is not refunded if it exceeds your tax.
