Health Insurance: TurboTax Calculating Penalty When Household Income Is Less Than 138% Of Poverty Line
In some cases, TurboTax is calculating a penalty when your household income is less than 138% of the federal poverty line and you live in a state that did not participate in the Medicaid expansion.
TurboTax will not automatically apply the exemption to dependents. If you have dependents on your return that qualify for the medicaid gap exemption follow the steps below.
- Select your coverage on the Did you have health insurance coverage in 2015? screen
- On the Did anyone have a situation that waives the tax penalty for being uninsured? check the Plans through work were not affordable box, Continue
- Select all twelve months for the dependent(s) who qualified for the medicaid gap exemption and Continue
