When I paid for Audit Defense, the browser window was too large for my standard 1920x1080 laptop screen, so that the [Back] and [Continue] buttons were off-screen. I had to guess that the blue sliver was [Continue]. When I attempted to pay for state e-file, the browser window was now completely blank. I tried several times. The likely problem is TurboTax for Windows does not handle scaled screen resolution, which is common and even recommended in Windows 10. I right-clicked on my desktop, chose Display settings, then under "Scale and Layout" I changed "Change the size of text, apps and other items" from 150% (Recommended) to 125%. I quit and restart TurboTax for Windows and the blank window problem was gone and the window wasn't too large. It seems Intuit's programmers don't deal properly with scaling in Windows. Note that this fix is not in the random laundry list of things to try in that "Troubleshoot blank screens, missing buttons, or missing images " link. It should be the first thing in the list to try.

@mike2000 wrote: Thanks Volvo girl! Two more questions for you... I have an old Windows 7 machine and for some reason all those internet browsers crash on me. Have no idea why. That's weird. Firefox should have no problem working on Windows 7. Try downloading and reinstalling it from getfirefox.com, if it keeps crashing it should volunteer to restart in Safe Mode. Do you know if you pay for the state filing directly through turbotax, or do they direct you to a browser to finish the purchase? I just paid for e-file with a credit card (I got fed up with all the disclaimers and privacy notice from the shady bank that gets your refund when I first chose to pay the fee out of my refund) and TurboTax for Windows invited me to log in to my Intuit account and enter credit card details there. The window that popped up to do this wasn't my regular browser, it seemed to be a browser window controlled by TurboTax. That makes sense because TurboTax pauses filing until it knows you've paid, which is hard (but not impossible) to do if it just opens a link in a regular browser. I doubt that you'll be able to pay the filing fee from another computer, for the same reason.

1 Cheer
> You can always uninstall and reinstall the software Yes, that's what I did. Removing the old version also failed with an internal error, but it got rid of enough stuff that I could reinstall. I guess chalk it up to software entropy: unchanged programs stop working as everything else on a Windows PC changes.

I returned to TurboTax 2018 Premier on Windows for the first time since April 2019 to make an estimated tax payment. When I double-clicked its icon, TurboTax displayed an alert TurboTax 2018 WinPerReleaseEngine Please wait while Windows configures TurboTax 2018 WinPerReleaseEngine but after several seconds displayed the error BUG: TurboTax won't let me select and copy the text of the error message, this is me hand-typing: The file ‘_lmth.0003001_tnetnoCpleH_gnimroftalpeR_tib23_rgnerepw_ cannot be installed because the file cannot be found in Cabinet file ‘TurboTax.cab’. This could indicate a network error, an error reading from the CD-ROM, or a problem with this package. and then "Fatal error during installlation." I don't know where WinPerReleaseEngine or TurboTax.cab live, they aren't in C:\Program Files (x86)\TurboTax\Premier 2018\ . I found an Installer in that directory and am attempting Repair, and that popped up its own failure alert BUG: I can't ^%$#@! select the text in this error either! Get a clue, Intuit! Error Installing C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Intuit\TurboTax\TY18 ApplicationController: MSI Install Exception occurred: Microsoft Installer error: 1334, with error code: 1334 stack trace: at Intuit.Tax.Installers.Setup.MsiHelper.InstallMSIPackage(boolean install, String msipath, String cmdLine, IntPtr ownerWindowHandle, Boolean userCanceled) at Intuit.Tax.stack trace: at Intuit.Tax.Installers.Setup.MsiHelper.ReInstallProductWithRecaching(MsiProductInfo pr...) Error Code: 1334 BUG: I apologize for the poor formatting, but when I try to indent the error messages, this forum post editor complains about invalid HTML in the message body. Sigh.

My brokerage provided a 1099-DIV with Line 6 "Foreign Tax Paid," so I'm going through the interview in TurboTax Premier 2017 to claim a foreign tax credit. The brokerage also supplied the foreign dividend amounts and "country" (all "RIC") in a supplemental table, so I can fill in TurboTax's initial fields. But then it asks "Date Taxes Paid", with 12/31/2017 pre-filled. The brokerage's supplemental info has a "Paid in 2017" column that is all $0, and a "Paid/Adjusted in 2018 for 2017" column with all the amounts of foreign taxes. So the Date Taxes Paid wasn't 12/31/2017 and it must have been in the first few months of 2018, but I can't be any more precise. What should I enter? (And TurboTax Premier has no help content or guidance or anything for this field, grrr.)

Your suggestion directly contradicts TurboTax's instructions for Other Reportable Income ("Do not enter income reported on Form 1099-MISC"), and it doesn't match the IRS' own instructions: "There's a special rule if you use a dwelling unit as a residence and rent it for fewer than 15 days. In this case, don't report any of the rental income and don't deduct any expenses as rental expenses." Maybe it's the best way, but TurboTax needs to handle this situation itself, properly!
