Death of a Spouse

How do I file a final return for a spouse who passed away when all tax returns have been filed as joint returns?  Do I file two returns?

Death of a Spouse

No, just the final year and you will be done.

If you remain single, then that would be your filing status (typically).

Death of a Spouse

I am very sorry for your loss.

You can file a joint return for the year your spouse passed provided you did not re-marry.

Will I have to file a final return for my deceased spouse in a subsequent year, or will I be done by filing a joint return in the year they passed away, since I didn't remarry?

The final return for the spouse will be done for the year of death, after that, your status in subsequent years will be according to a new marriage or dependents that you may have on the following years return.
