US citiz, works for internalional org (World Bank) and needs to pay self employment tax but should account for proportion of days worked abroad. How to get deduction?

The W2 says:If you have operational travel days outside the U.S., you may report on your Schedule SE a prorated portion of your wages based on this fraction: number of days of WBG work inside the U.S. during the calendar year / total number of WBG work days during the calendar year. Please note that you are responsible for tracking the number of your operational travel days outside the U.S., and you may wish to seek advice from a tax professional on the application of the operational travel reduction.

Here are the steps for how to enter it, with some screenshots to help you find them.

We're looking first for the screen "Let's check for uncommon situations" where the box "Employed by a foreign government or international organization" should be checked.

If you don't see this screen after the W-2 entry screens, try deleting the W-2 and entering it again.

After this screen be sure to click on Done on the W-2 summary page.

It is after the summary screen that you should next see the prompt for self-employment tax (based on the checkbox in the first screenshot)

Especially when working in the online version of TurboTax, sometimes entries get "stuck" based on prior answers and deleting the item and re-entering will often fix it.  For good measure, it's also a good idea to clear cache and cookies (or switch to Icognito mode on your browser) after deleting the entry and before entering again.

If these things don't work please reply back and let us know which version of TurboTax you are using, and if you're working online or if you've installed the app on a computer.

While I can't be reached by phone, I'll keep an eye on this thread and either I or one of my colleagues will try to respond to you quickly to any additional questions.

  1. Enter your W-2 with the information shown on your form.
  2. If you have additional W-2s, enter those as well.
  3. Click Done (or Continue.)
  4. On the screen Let's check for uncommon situations, heck the box beside  "Employed by a foreign government or international organization".
  5. Click Done on the W-2 summary screen
  6. On the screen Let's check if you have self-employment wages enter the amount of your salary that is subject to self-employment tax from your own calculation.
  7. Click Continue.

Thank you very much!

This makes sense. However, I never see a screen that says  "On the screen Let's check if you have self-employment wages enter the amount of your salary that is subject to self-employment tax from your own calculation.  "

Is it possible to talk to you or someone who knows how to do it? I have talked to a live expert, but unfortunately most don't know how to handle this special case.

Thank you

Francisco
