TT Home and Business: California e-file rejected due to Form 568 missing SoS Number

Hi,

My non-resident California e-file got a reject for LLC Form 568 indicating that I was missing the SoS file number. I have given it a LLC Temporary Number in TT which is exactly what I did last year and there was absolutely no issue with that e-file.  The email is asking me to print out paper forms and to mail the corrected forms to the FTB.   Then strangely, I received an email from TT saying that my California personal return was accepted.  I'm confused now.  Does the acceptance of my personal return mean that the Form 568 was also accepted?  Any help would be great.

For a single-member LLC filing a Schedule C, TurboTax will create Form 568 based on the answers to the questions entered in the Schedule C section and the California interview.

Currently, if you are using TurboTax Home & Business desktop version or Self-Employed online version, the Form 568 has to be printed and mailed. TurboTax Business only handles multi-member LLCs, not single-member LLCs.

Form 568 for single-member LLC's can't be e-filed in any of the TurboTax product versions.

TT Home and Business: California e-file rejected due to Form 568 missing SoS Number

Adding some new information here after I had to file my California Form 568 via paper form after it was rejected by e-file.  I hope this additional information will benefit others in the future, especially those LLCs (in my case, a SMLLC) formed outside California.

I contacted the California FTB and the representative mentioned that you can use the Temp LLC number (issued by the FTB, not the California Secretary of State) in place of the SoS number, or a Reason Code.  They said that since the SoS number is a 12-digit number, to add 3 leading zeros to the 9-digit Temp LLC number so that it meets that requirement.  Note, based on my research, SoS numbers generally have a 19 or 20 prefix, but the FTB rep said that the e-file system should accept.

I have made the change in a copy of my 2022 TT file to see if it would reject the use of the Temp LLC number in the SoS number filed on Form 568, and TT did not complain.  Looking at the generated form, it does have the Temp LLC number where the SoS number field is.  Unfortunately, I will not be able to e-file for a final test until tax year 2023.
