He should file a tax return and report the $960 as business income. It will be reported on a schedule C. You can deduct any expenses associated with the work that were necessary and ordinary to generate the income. The net income will be subject to a self-employment tax that will be applied to the worker's social security account.
Son no.2 also got a 1099nec of 10k while working a summer office job out of state. Living out of state was required for the job. Can I deduct his temporary housing as an expense against the 1099nec earnings? If so how?
With son no.2 filing resident return in pa. And non resident return in MA.
Thanks very much.
Housing expenses are not deductible unless the temporary assignment is related to a permanent job, Travel expenses between his temporary location and his permanent home are not deductible either.
