It may be easier for you to start with the schedule C and add the 1099-MISC. A 1099-MISC does not automatically generate self-employment income. It can also be used to report other types of income which are not subject to self-employment tax.
If you scroll down in the wages and income section of your federal return until you reach 'Business Items' the first line is 'Business Income and Expenses'. Click start next to that and as you go through the information there it will ask if you have a 1099-MISC. You will say yes and it will add it to the schedule C and then allow you to enter any expenses.
