When you enter the Form 1099-NEC in TurboTax, you will be asked a series of questions to determine how the income should be treated on your tax return, as "Other" income or self-employment income. Typically , if the income is associated with work that is similar to that performed on your main job, or if the work is recurring year to year and earned in an activity carried on with a profit motive, the IRS will be inclined to treat it as self-employment income. If you don't think it should be treated in that way, you would need to indicate that it wasn't associated with work like your main job, not something you have received in previous years or will receive in future years and that you received it without an intent to make a profit.
