Can I "correct" the HSA info on my W2 in TurboTax?

We had a HDHP in 2023. We switched plans to a non-HDHP in 2024, but the coverage continued until 13 Jan 2024.  Our forms to stop contributing through work did not get processed until Feb 2024 (the first submission seems to have been lost) so there were 3 contributions made in 2024 before we realized it. I contacted our HSA asking what we needed to do since we were not on an HDHP for 2024. They said that since we were under the allowed amount for 2023 that we could complete a tax correction form with them and have all of those funds counted toward 2023.  We did that, and I included those extra contributions on our 2023 taxes in addition to what showed on the 2023 W2. When I log into the HSA account, it shows $0 contributions for 2024.

Now, we're working on our 2024 taxes, but our 2024 W2 shows those contributions for 2024.  Since we completed the tax correction forms last year and already claimed that amount on our 2023 taxes, is there any way to "correct" this amount from the W2 within Turbo Tax to explain that it was applied to 2023 and not 2024?

Yes, there is a way to handle the situation on your 2024 tax return.

Report the information shown on your W-2 just as it appears.  This will include the amount shown in box 12 with code W for the HSA contribution that was attributed to 2023.

Then, follow these steps:

  • Go through the Deductions and Credits > Medical > 1099-SA, HSA, MSA section of your return.  Here you will indicate who owns the HSA account and go through the questions in this section.
  • Be sure to answer 'yes' to the question about any contributions made in 2024.
  • Then there will be a question that says "Did your employer tell you about any other contributions?"  Answer 'yes'.
  • Then enter the amount reported on your W-2 in the box beside Employer and payroll contributions made in 2024 for tax year 2023.
  • Finish the rest of the section according to your situation.
