Am I correct in my understanding that the "prior and current depreciation" amount that you are referring to is found on Line 37 of the Car & Truck Worksheet? And this is the amount that should be placed in Lines 51 & 52?
I apologize but I'm trying to do this from the online version which makes is a little more difficult it would seem.
Yes, the amount on the Car & Truck Worksheet Line 37 Prior Depreciation should be the amount on Part VII Line 51 and 52.
Your best option is to move the amount from Line 36(i) Special Depreciation Allowance to Line 37 Prior Depreciation and enter a zero for Line 36(i). That should resolve the form error and report the correct amount of gain on the sale without using any overrides.
Thank you for your continued assistance with this.
Since the online version was not allowing me to edit, I got the desktop version. However its not allowing me to edit there either.
I have opened the Car & Truck worksheet and identified the lines that i need to edit as they are also highlighted in the form and have a red exclamation next to it. However it is not allowing me to edit. I am right clicking and nothing is happening. I am using a MAC if that is of any assistance.
You say to override this entry. Earlier you said this would invalidate the TurboTax accuracy guarantee. TurboTax is clearly responsible for this problem. You cannot take us back to a source for this field.
How about telling us that the problem is real. That TurboTax recognizes there is a problem here. And, then provide us with a fix.
36i on my worksheet is blank. I assume that means it is already zero.
lines 51 and 52 say 3,200. This is the only error flagged by TurboTax.
What now?
In 2024 tax season, I had the same error, but found all online support suggestions were incorrect.
1) The source of the error was "0" being entered into the online form fields, rather than leaving the fields blank. To be clear, clearing the fields of any entry solves the issue.
Further issues that were not part of the solution:
2) Downloading the Desktop version must be Delux or higher version. Basic will not download a return from the web.
3) Editing the form in the Desktop version did not resolve the issue "AMT dep allowed/allowable is too large".
This error message can refer to more than one errant entry on the Car & Truck Worksheet. One fix may not resolve all individual return errors.
Try deleting the numbers that are causing the error message and leave the lines blank. Or try one of the options listed earlier on this thread.
Your final option is to provide a token so we can investigate further:
You can send us a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information. If you would like to do this, please follow these instructions:
In TurboTax Online, open your return, go to the black panel on the left side of your program and select Tax Tools.
If you are using TurboTax for Desktop, go to Online in the top menu, then choose "Send Tax File to Agent."
We will then be able to see the same experience you are having. If we are able to determine the cause, we'll reply here and provide you with a resolution.
@PatriciaV Hello, I am getting this same error. Lines 47 and 48.
I am using the desktop version...small business. Can you help me please?
Have you tried all the recent options presented in this thread? Deleting, entering zero, switching entries, etc.?
If so, and you are still seeing the form error, please follow the instructions posted previously for obtaining and posting a token for your return.
