You cannot use the Online version to file a 2019 return. The Online version is only to prepare the current year's tax return (now is for 2020).  You can use the Online version for your 2020 return.

To file your return with TurboTax you will need to purchase the Desktop version of TurboTax which you install on your computer.  You will need to mail in your 2019 return.

You can purchase the 2019 tax software from TurboTax at the following link:

What rejection code are you receiving?

An e-file rejection just means that some things on your return don't match the IRS database.

If you received an ACTION NEEDED! email from turbotax@intuit.com, it'll give you a brief explanation of your reject and how to update it. You can also do this:

  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account and select Fix my return to see your reject code and explanation.
  2. Follow any “fix it” instructions to update the info causing the reject.
  3. Select File in the left-hand menu to refile your return, either e-file or file by mail.

Please click How do I fix a rejected return? to see a list of common rejection reasons if a rejection code was not included in your email.

To prepare your 2019 return, please follow the instructions here

Turbo Tax offers a free file for the current year, as we have our online software. In order to file a prior year, you need to purchase and download the 2019 software.

I purchased the desktop version and it was for 2020.

I paid for it and I got the 2020?

any suggestions on how I can get the 2019 download without paying them again?

Sorry, Online for 2019 and prior is closed now so you can not start a new 2019 or prior return or finish one. Online is only for 2020. Oct 15, was the last day to efile.  2019 is now the prior year. If you entered 2019 into the 2020 online version you should clear out your online return so you can use it for 2020.

Or How to file a prior year
https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/using-turbotax/help/how-do-i-prepare-a-prior-year-tax-return/00/25984

You can only buy the download for prior years. You have to buy a separate program for each year. They only sell the last 3 years. You need a full Windows or Mac computer to install it on. Buy the download here
https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/

You have to print and mail prior year returns. When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS received the return. Don’t forget state.

Important! Mail Federal and State in separate envelopes and mail each year in separate envelopes.

If you are getting a refund, there is not a penalty for filing past the deadline. You have 3 years to file for a refund. If you owe taxes, the interest/penalties will be calculated by the IRS based on how much you owe and when they receive your return and payment. The IRS will bill you for this; it will not be calculated by TurboTax.

If you want to file for free you can fill out the forms by hand. Here are some basic forms…..

Here is the IRS 2019 Form 1040
https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/f1040--2019.pdf

or if you want bigger type use 1040SR for Seniors,
https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/f1040s--2019.pdf

And 2019 Instructions https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/i1040gi--2019.pdf

Then when you do file 2020 enter 0 for the 2019 AGI since you are filing 2019 late.

I have links for other years too.

You are very kind.  Your reply provided me comfort with much information and links to where I need to go.  Thank you very much.  I kind of thought I would have to file by paper, but was not sure.  Additionally, what you stated at the end is very helpful indeed, "Then when you do file 2020 enter 0 for the 2019 AGI since you are filing 2019 late."  I would like to use TurboTax to do my 2020 Federal and State tax returns right away after mailing my Federal and State paper returns for 2019 (and I am expecting a refund on both those returns).  If I use TurboTax for my 2020 Federal and State tax returns, won't entering 0 for the 2019 AGI on both my 2020 Federal and State returns cause new problems for me?  Thank you so very much for your kind help.

No it would not cause new problems. It would be the only way to file using e-file, as the IRS would not have your 2019 AGI since it has to be filed on paper. Any other number would cause it to be rejected @daybo

No, 0 is ok.  It is only to verify you to efile.   It does not affect your 2020 return.

Thank you for your reply.  I was wondering now if when I do my 2020 Federal and State tax returns thru Turbotax, will I now be considered as a new customer and have to enter in all the information that Turbotax would have simply brought over from my previous year (2019) Federal and State tax returns?  Apart from this, when my 2019 Federal and State tax returns are received and processed, will that trigger eligibility to receive my first stimulus check I that would have received had my returns been filed last year, or did I now miss out on that first stimulus check since I'm filing late even though I am expecting a refund on both my Federal and State 2019 tax returns?  thank you again for your kind thoughtfulness to me. 💞

Ok  you have 2 questions.  For 2019.  How did you do 2019?  Did you use the Desktop program on your computer?  You can transfer from the prior year on your computer into the Online version. You will need to have the .tax2019 file on your computer.  Here’s How to transfer into the Online version, expand the blue link if you used the CD/download for 2019........
https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/entering-importing/help/how-do-i-transfer-last-year-s-return-into-turbotax-online/00/25953

For the Stimulus.  Forget about 2019 and 2018.  The Stimulus Checks are really based on your 2020 return we are filing in 2021. So any amount you already got will be reconciled on your 2020 return line 30. If you didn't get a Stimulus Check (and qualify) or you qualify for more it will be added to your 2020 return. But the good news is if they paid you too much they won't take it back.

When you go through the federal review tab it will ask how much you got if any. Or to enter your stimulus payment in TurboTax, type "stimulus" (without the quotes) in the Search box, then click the link that says "Jump to stimulus." Say no to the amounts it shows you. Then 2 boxes will open up for each round. If you didn't get one enter a 0 in the box.

After you have entered your tax information and are ready for the Federal Review, it will be the first question.

If you are trying to trigger it, you can go to Other Situations, answer any questions and click Done. The next automatic selection is Federal Review and it will ask about payments received.

The Recovery rebate credit is on 1040 line 30. It either adds to your refund or reduces a tax due.

To the best of my knowledge, I used Turbotax to do my 2019 Federal and State tax returns just before midnight on July 15, 2020.  I had misplaced my 2019 W-2s, and I told myself to just file without that W-2 information (I think I entered zero where it asked for that W-2 information) just so that I would not be charged a late-filing penalty.  A few days later, I found my W-2s and went back into Turbotax to redo my 2019 returns.  But Turbotax stated my 2019 Federal and State tax returns had already been filed and I could not refile for 2019.  After extreme effort, I finally got through to a Federal IRS agent in December 2020 and explained the above (never got through to a California state IRS rep).  The Federal IRS agent checked, placed me on a long hold, came back and said they do not show any indication I filed a 2019 tax return.  Fast forward, my search for answers for what to do led me to this Turbotax forum.  What little I could find on the Internet also indicated I needed to file paper tax returns for Federal and State tax year 2019.

Apart for this, I had thought you would only get a Stimulus check if the IRS had found you filed a 2019 tax return.  Since I have not receive any Stimulus check yet, wouldn't this support my thought?  While writing you about my entire matter today, I noticed a banner in Turbotax stating something about a third Stimulus check.  I have not received any so far.  Will following what you state below re "Jump to stimulus" and "Federal Review" and "Recovery rebate credit on 1040 line 30" qualify me to receive all three (if that third one is approved)?

Thank you so much again.

For the 3rd Stimulus......NO you can only get the first 2 rounds now on your 2020 return.  If you don't get a separate check or deposit for the 3rd one it will be added to your 2021 return next year.

I'm not sure about your 2019 return.  I guess you used the Online version last year?  You didn't install the Desktop CD/Download program on your computer, right?  And Turbo Tax said you filed 2019?  When you log into your account what exactly does it say under the 2019 tab?  You may have to print and mail 2019 now.  And if you didn't actually file it you can add the missing W2s etc.  to the original return before you mail it.

Then when you find your 2019 return you can transfer it into 2020 even if you haven't filed 2019 yet.  So let's first work on seeing what happened with 2019.

Sorry for the delay, had to run an errand.  Re online version vs Desktop CD/Download program to my computer, I'm not sure.  I know I did not use a CD or Download any program to my computer, so I assume it would be the online version.  Re what is stated under 2019 tab, it asked if I wanted to downlead a copy of my 2019 return.  I selected yes.  It asked why I wanted a copy of my 2019 tax return.  I wrote, "To see what actually got filed with the IRS in 2020 for tax year 2019. I was told by an IRS rep in December 2020 that they had nothing on file re my 2019 tax return."  Turbotax said okay, downloaded a filled-out Form 1040-X & a filled-out Form 1040 for my Federal and State taxes.  This information came downloaded in a 125-page pdf.  Amazingly, I do not know where Turbotax got the figures it plugged into all those boxes because I don't feel smart enough to even know how all those figures came about when I did not even have my 2019 W-2 information when I submitted my Federal and State returns on July 15, 2020?  Further, I do not remember submitting any 1040-X.  And how did Turbotax get my W-2 information to plug into the filled out Form 1040?  Is there a way to tell in Turbotax when these Forms 1040 & 1040-X were filled out and presented to the IRS?  A few days ago, I filled out my 2019 Federal and State tax returns online and planned to print and mail them next week.  Now, I'm not sure what to do as I just might make matters worse if I mail them.  I'm baffled. 🤕

You better call in and ask about your 2019 return.  Sounds like you might not have filed the original return but did an amended return.
