This is a known issue and is being resolved.  When attempting to e-file a return in the TurboTax for Windows CD/Download software, this message appears:

There is an update available for your version of TurboTax. Before you can file electronically, you’ll need to get this update. To do this, go to the Online menu and select Check for Updates.

However, after updating, the same message continues to reappear, resulting in an endless loop.

Workaround

Some customers have been able to successfully e-file with this workaround:

  1. Follow the steps in the article Troubleshoot TurboTax for Windows updating issues.
  2. Now try e-filing again. If that didn't work, first uninstall and then reinstall your TurboTax program.
  3. Finally, if you're still unable to e-file after following the above steps, you can either sign up to be notified by email when a fix has been released, or you can file a conventional paper return.

"There is an update available for your version of TurboTax" loop when e-filing (Windows).   If you are still having issues, click on this link - thank you!

I can't believe intuit shipped a broken product. I paid money for this and I have tried all of the fixes on the forums for this issue. It still doesn't work. After 15+ years of using this product there will not be another. The answer from the help line is file by paper or wait for us to get to it. Come on. Lat year I had a glitch to they were able to get around.

So what happens to the $20 state filing fee that has already been charged to my credit card? This has already been going on a week and still no fix? Wow!

Mail my tax return? Really? I didn't pay over $100 for Federal, State plus efile fees to be told to mail a paper return. How pathetic. Fix this!!

Two weeks and this problem still has not been resolved?

Is it ever going to be resolved or is Turbo Tax not really interested in helping people that have been using their product for 15 years.  The ones that still buy it at the store instead of living in the "download" everything world.

When I spoke to a customer service rep on Friday he DENIED having a problem.  Three times I specifically asked if the software had a problem.  All he wanted to do was remote into my computer to see what I had done wrong.  Which I refused.

And then I go to this website and see that the problem has existed for two weeks!!!!!

Problem seems to be with my Illinois return. When I tried filing both together - got error. Did Federal only - went through. Illinois only is doing the same thing...

If you are having an issue when trying to submit your state return, you can use the link provided below. If that does not work, you may want to contact TurboTax Customer Support.

@Littldave

Please try this:

Close the TurboTax program

Right click on the TurboTax desktop icon

Click on the Compatibility tab

Check the box Run as administrator

Click on Apply and then OK

Start the TurboTax program.  The software should update.

If that does not fix the issue, please try to Forcefully uninstall and reinstall TurboTax. Uninstall everything before reinstall. Delete all folders, not just uninstall software. These folders are usually hidden, to unhide them choose tools (at top of any folder)  - then folder options - then view then check show hidden files, uncheck when done

I've been using Turbo tax since 2018, why do I still have this issue today in 2025? Why is it still not being resolved?
