My TT screen says "Welcome to TT...In 3 quick steps you can make changes to your filed return"..But I have not filed it yet, I was still working on it just last week online. Now it wants to me to download and purchase 2022 TT software and make me start from the beginning. This can't be happening.
The online system in now in transition from 2022 returns to 2023 returns. You will be able to access the return you started by using the exact same account and user ID that you used when you started it. But you can no longer use online software for any further changes.
Online tax preparation and e-filing for 2022 returns is now permanently closed.
Now it is too late to use online software or to e-file. If you have any changes/corrections at all to make to your 2022 return, you now have to complete it using desktop software, which you must download to a full PC or Mac (not to a mobile device). Then you need to print, sign and mail it.
If you already paid for your online software you can ask customer support for a download of the desktop software.

If you are getting a refund, there is no penalty for filing late. If you owe tax due, then file and pay the amount due as shown on the Form 1040, but expect a bill later from the IRS for the penalty and interest you will owe. Only the IRS will calculate this—TurboTax will not calculate it.
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
Thank you for replying to me. I did log on using the exact same account and user ID that I used when I started it, but there's no where to retrieve my information. It tells me to purchase & download the 2022 TT Software, which I did, but it is making me start from the beginning, it doesn't have what I already inputted.
Your data has not disappeared.

Thank you. I called, they are closed for the holiday and won't be available until Monday. I am freaking out, my info that was stored/saved is not even in 'my documents' . I am in full panic mode right now because I have no idea where to find it and I only have this weekend to finish.
Many people have multiple TT accounts and forget how to access them. Log out of the account you are in now.

Or did you use the desktop version of TurboTax? If so, the files are on your own hard drive or any backup device you used like a flash drive.

" I am in full panic mode right now because I have no idea where to find it and I only have this weekend to finish."
If you are getting a refund, there is not a penalty for filing past the deadline.
If you owe tax due and need to pay before the deadline---pay it online at the IRS site or if you owe the state--pay them on the state site. Then get your returns mailed asap even if you have to wait until after Monday.

Thank you for trying to help me. I only have 1 TT account and have logged out and logged back in 16 times (not an exaggeration). I only used the TT online platform, didn't use desktop version. When I purchased and downloaded the 2022 TT for my desktop, it gave me an option to continue from TT online or to start new. I clicked on the option to continue TT online and it made me log on again, only to be brought to the same homepage, over and over and over again. I've been at this for 3 hours now.
Seriously, thank you for replying and helping. I won't owe anything and will get a measly return, it's the fact that I have to start from the beginning now that is really messing me up. I am post tbi and have had so much trouble with this, it's beyond frustrating.
Again---if you do not owe, you have three years to file those tax returns to the IRS and state. So.....breathe. Wait until you can get the help you need from customer support to retrieve your data. It is there. TurboTax does not delete it. Someone from support will be able to help you recover it and move it into the desktop software so that you can print and mail it.
BUT, did you actually also download your .tax2022 file from your Online account?
Installing the Desktop software is one step...and you need to get the file itself as a separate step
__________________________________
OK,,,assuming you do have the right Online file.
1) If you don't have the state(s) you need installed yet.....Start up your TTX Desktop program, and start a dummy file...just get into it far enough to enter your personal information, then download the state software you will need to use. Then save the file, but Save-As with the name as "DummyFile" (keeping the .tax2022 extension as-is).
2) Then log into your "Online" account. (See the picture below.) You need to download your .tax2022 file . See the link in step 1??? When you download it, do a Save-As and download it into the same TurboTax folder that contains your DummyFile. (should be in a TurboTax sub-Folder in your Documents directory...at least that's where it is on a Windows computer).
3) After downloading that file. Close your "Online" account. Start up the Desktop program (if not already started), go up to the top left corner, click on "File" and select "Open Tax Return", then navigate to that downloaded file and open it. That should be your saved 2022 tax file from your Online account.
(After you've saved it at least once from within the TTX program, that file will appear in opening screen for you to select every time you start up the desktop software)
ALSO...note that the file won 't load properly unless you have the proper state(s) software installed first, so the step #1 above is critical. (Of course, in your initial attempts to start things up again, you may already have your needed state(s) loaded)
I am in the same boat as @erinfallon11....and I am freaking out too! I did 90% of my taxes online in October. Due to family emergencies I am just now getting back to it and it is GONE. Where is all the work I did? I did NOT save the file as you mentioned above. Does that mean I am doomed to start completely over???? Please do not send me the canned message that maybe I have 2 accounts and am not logging into the right one. I AM 200% SURE I AM LOGGING INTO THE RIGHT ACCOUNT. I've had turbo tax for years and have a password keeper. I do NOT have 2 accounts. Please please tell me I can recover this or else I have to start over. I am getting a refund so I am not worried about late fees but I need to get this completed and do not want to start over. It is the weekend so no one at Intuit answers. :( Does anyone know if they can help me recover my info? It was all done online and I did not save the .tax file unfortunately
Hi Nicole, So I eventually was able to recover my tax info. Did it make you have to purchase and download the 2022 TT software? If so, this is where it got dicey for me, because it gave me the option to continue with my return or start over, and when I hit continue with my return and it had me log in again to my TT account online, I was getting nowhere. What I wound up doing was, un-installing the TT 2022 software from my computer, then reinstalling it with the purchase code from the receipt and then trying again. I had to re-install and uninstall it 3 times I think before finally on the 3rd time, I was able to 'continue from TT online' , sign in and it retrieved my info finally. There has to be a glitch in between their software and online site. I hope this helps and I hope you can retrieve your info.
IF you a re in the right account, you should be able to see the screen I posted above.
Right there is a circled link that allows you to download your .tax2022 datafile.
Then you buy, download and install the 2022 "DESKTOP" software to be run on a full Windows or MAC computer. (Don't buy 2023 software...that's useless for you)
IF you can't find that file, then you will have to start over, using the Desktop 2022 software.
In any case, you will end up having to print out your tax forms, sign, date, attach any W-2 forms, or any other tax forms that show tax withholding (Fed withholding for IRS, or State withholding for yoru state) and take them to the Post Office to mail into the appropriate tax authority. (i.e IRS and State are entirely separate places)
@nicole_bronstad Online TurboTax is in transition from 2022 to 2023. Until the transition is complete--in early December--your account may be "frozen"---meaning you have to wait and access the 2022 return you started when the online system re-opens for 2023. Your 2022 data is saved---when you are able to access it, you will need to finish preparing your 2022 return using downloaded desktop software on a full PC or Mac. Online for 2022 is closed--you cannot use online to make changes or add to your 2022 return. And... the 2022 return will have to be filed by mail; you will not be able to e-file it.
When it re-opens:
You will be able to access the return you started by using the exact same account and user ID that you used when you started it. But you can no longer use online software for any further changes.

I AM in the right account. I am SURE. I can NOT see that screen shot above. Can you please tell me how to navigate to that page? I tried everything....When I open it up now it there is no options like you said above. From the comment from xmasbaby looks like it is all locked down now? This is extremely frustrating. TT should do something for people caught in this loop of nothingness. I have faithfully used their software for 15 years. My info should be saved somewhere and I should not have to wait another month to finish this. Would the customer support number be able to help me retrieve it on Monday? Thank you very very much for trying to help! I am just really frustrated and I know that there have to be many others in my boat. Life happens and people cannot always get everything in by the deadline. I do understand I won't be penalize due to refund and that I need to mail the hard copies in. That isn't a problem....getting my info is the problem.
I know you're in the right account, cause I was too! I didn't submit a screen shot, so idk maybe someone else did. If you had to purchase the 2022 TT software download, did it give you a long pin # to use when downloading it from your account?
If you downloaded the 2022 TT software, a new screen/or on my pc, the installed TT software icon, came up after I installed it. I clicked on it and it brought up a new, smaller boxed screen that asked me to sign in, when I did that, it then gave me 2 options, to start new or to 'continue' with my 2022 online taxes. I clicked on the continue option, then it made me sign in again and then it made me sign in again after that, it was ridiculous. So, I un-installed it and then started again after logging back into my online TT account. Went to my account, it had the 2022 TT software purchase download and like 16 digit/letter pin for it. I clicked on it and went thru the motions to download the software onto my laptop again. I had to do this 3 times before I finally was able to sign in, continue with my 2022 taxes and it didn't make me sign in again - it finally retrieved my info.
Yeah, it may be locked down now (mine isn't ((at least I can get the .tax2022 datafile right now)), but that may not be the case for everyone)
But like xmasbaby indicated...once the lockdown ends (When Online 2023 starts up...early to mid Dec), you should be able to get your 2022 tax datafile then (though you may have to go into the first several pages of 2023 first).
________
TTX has to lock own the "Online" files EVERY YEAR in Mid-Late October to get ready for the new season.
Thus, just don't ever expect unfettered access to that year's tax files between mid Oct and early December........get it done & filed or printed before mid October, or you may end up jumping thru hoops.

Amen, SteamTrain. Miss the due date for a school assignment--your grade is lower. Miss the due date to pay a bill--late fees. Miss a flight at the airport--re-book and hope for another later flight. Miss the deadline to finish your tax return....wait for the software to become available again......
I want to refer to my previous filed 2022 tax return including work sheets
You have to access your own account and/or print it for yourself using exactly the same account and user ID that you used when you prepared the return.
Start a 2023 return online and enter some personal information so that the menu on the left opens up and lets you access your past year returns.
Many people have multiple TT accounts and forget how to access them. Log out of the account you are in now.

SAVE YOUR TAX RETURN !
EVERY year before mid-October you should save a copy of your tax return as a pdf and print a copy of it for your records. That way you will not be searching online frantically when you need it for a lender, FAFSA forms, your next tax return, etc.

NOTE: TurboTax and the IRS save returns for seven years. Returns older than seven years are purged.
