Question

Is the number "1-866-602-4279" legit? Received an email from "no-reply@e.turbotax.intuit.com"

When I called the number it asked for my social, name, and email. The lady told me someone had accidentally used my social security number and not to worry about it. My concern is if this was actually turbotax or not.

I'm looking for a specific answer that tells if the number and email are real.

I'm hearing impaired and can't hear clearly over the phone.  I have the same issue with the email and I'm trying to find a way to get in contact thru another way other than phone

I'm in Mexico and can't get the e-file to work.  I end up in an endless do loop.  I can't reach your US phone.

Any suggestions?

I already called and the person told me that she doesn't have a directory of numbers to verify or not, that she could only google and see what others said of the number.

866-602-4279 is a valid number for the Security and Privacy Team.

Similar security alerts are sent when you or someone else opens a new account with your SSN or other personal information. Sometimes people create second accounts by mistake.  You can use the account recovery tool to see if you might have a second account associated with one of your email addresses.  https://myturbotax.intuit.com/account-recovery/  If the new account is one that you are using to file a return, you can contact the security team to have them release the return.

If you believe that you did not create a duplicate account, you should read the below advice and call TurboTax Privacy & Security right away.  Someone may have tried to file a tax return with your SSN.

However, it is also possible for scammers to copy and alter legitimate emails.  For example, Turbotax will never tell you to install files from an email attachment, or to send personal information via email.  Make sure you do not answer any personal questions by email, and don't put personal information into a web site unless the address is intuit.com and it shows a padlock icon that means the web site is verified by an outside security company.

If you want to independently get a verified number for customer support, use the web form on the Turbotax web site.

Opus has answered the question. I would advice that the support people know that a security team exists, she said there was only one department and couldn't transfer me to anyone. They should be able to verify which numbers are legit or not also. And the article pertaining to this event should list the number so that people can crosscheck viability, instead it just says to use the number in the email.

I received this email last night too and the email says you only have 48 hours to contact them to report that it is not me. I called the number and it says they are closed until Monday morning which is beyond the 48 hours since I received the email. Will they still process the fraudulent tax return on Sunday?

Exactly! I received this email at 2:32 am EDT on a Saturday morning. That plus 48 hours is before any of the Intuit agents will be available to answer my call. And I live 6 hours behind that, so the earliest they are around to talk to is in the middle of the night for me. I sure hope the "48 hours" is Intuit Support business hours...

Legit. Got an email because of first year filing married separate. Called and they only asked the partial secure info. Last 4 not full ssn. Year of birth not full. Verified the issue without me asking. All straight.

legit number. i was hesistant. then i did what another person said. login to your turbotax account. go to settings and security and then go to account activity. there was a login from 10 hours ago. so i called the number. they ask a bunch of questions, automated. then i was transferred to a human. can't stand hackers! make sure you have 2 step authentication set on your account. this helps most times.

SCAM - DO NOT CALL THIS PHONE NUMBER. I received the same email last night and called the number. Spoke to someone named Flo with an English accent. She asked to confirm my name, email address and phone number. She also asked if I was logged into my account because they will want to screen share. I said I wasn't logged in and she said she would transfer me to TurboTax's Security team but there would be more than an hour long wait so they would call me back. I shouldn't have called the number and I went directly to TurboTax's Support Contact Center on their website (should have done this first). I submitted an inquiry using their form and was given a different phone number to call. I spoke to Julie from TurboTax and told her about the Security Email Alert email received and she sent an email from her account to me and asked me to compare it to the email address in the security alert. I told her it was different and she confirmed that it was not a legit email from TurboTax. She mentioned that they've been receiving a lot of phone calls regarding this scam. She also said that the IRS is not accepting tax returns until the first week of February. As a safety precaution, she told me to change my account password.  The scammers just called me back and I sent them straight to voicemail.

Never trust an email from any source saying you must contact them asap  ...  and never call any number in it  but if you do then never ever  call any number that they suggesting ... always go directly to the source by calling a verifiable number.
