2020 Turbotax will not update. What can be done to remedy?

I purchased through Costco a month ago and downloaded the program.  The updater always times out and says it is reporting to microsoft.

Open TurboTax and select Check for Updates from the Online menu near the top. On a Mac, simply quit and reopen TurboTax. If there are any updates, you'll be prompted to download them.

Tips:

  • It's best to use a wired, high-speed connection when updating, both to save time and minimize data corruption.
  • If your connection drops in the middle of the update, try again; it should pick up where it left off.
  • If you're having trouble updating on your PC, try a manual update.

TurboTax Business 2020 says it needs to update but TT says it's updated. The manual update function online doesn't work for business.

Received the email from support saying to use the 2019 update, this does not work.

Above you will see:

The error box from TT

The updated box from TT

A pic of the update filename TT says to use

The dialogue box that appears when you run the update

Please advise.

There were many updates this past week and even as of today. I would suggest you shut down completely, reboot, and when you get the message for "updates need to be installed", allow the installation, then once complete you will want to shut down again. It might take a couple of hours (or even overnight) then, once you reboot the updates should be completely "in effect" on your system.

Thank you for the suggestion.  My system hasn't updated since 2/12 so there is an issue somewhere.  I'll uninstall then reinstall and see if it updates correctly, then open my previously saved tax file.

Used the repair function in TT.  Nothing.

Uninstalled and reinstalled and downloaded updates, tried to file, received the same dialogue boxes.

Turbo Tax has had this problem for the 2nd year in a row, but this is the 1st year that it says I can't file until I update it.  The problem is that the update doesn't work.  It just sits there & does absolutely nothing.  There isn't anything wrong with my internet connection.  The problem is I've used Turbo Tax for years and if this is going to continue to be a problem I will just start going to any of the other free filing websites.  I only use it for federal since I use CalFile to do my state.  It's really unacceptable to be done with your taxes and not be able to file them.  For years this was not an issue & now it's constant.  I even told my husband I hope it's not an issue when we go to use it & sure enough after last week it needs to update.  Please get it together.  It's a blessing Turbo Tax has people pay for their product when we could file for free.

Have you tried to manually update the software?

Yes.  The point is I pay for a CD.  I have for years.  I shouldn't have to jump through hoops.  Last 2 years TurboTax has an update issue.  And then I can update 1 tax year but if I try a different one it won't update.  IRS gives information on free sites so if we pay it should work. Period.

I had this same problem over the weekend - the update was getting stuck at 10%. I tried applying the manual update and run all of the Windows scans in previous Community articles, but none of that worked.

I found out that the recent security update from Windows 10 is blocking Turbotax from being updated.

I had to go into Window Updates History (push the Start Button, search "Windows Updates" and click "Check for Updates", then click "View Update History") and click "Uninstall Updates". Then Uninstall the recent update (KB4601319).

By deleting this recent Windows update, it allowed Turbotax to Update.

NOTE: DO NOT FORGET TO REAPPLY THIS WINDOWS UPDATE AFTER YOU FILE!

You can bypass the update by clicking update & then when it does nothing bring up your task manager (control+alt+delete).  In there end task the installer, NOT Turbo Tax.  When you do that it should close & let you in TurboTax.  The problem though is you can't e-file unless it updates.

Will not update.

I’ve uninstalled Turbotax(there was an issue with that too), reinstalled Turbo Tax.  I downloaded the manual patch, that didn’t work.

I am at a loss.   What a POS

Have you tried updating using Check for Updates, as well as following the instructions for the manual update below?

If you're on a PC, open TurboTax and select Check for Updates from the Online menu near the top. On a Mac, simply quit and reopen TurboTax. If there are any updates, you'll be prompted to download them.

If you're having trouble updating your TurboTax 2020 for Windows Individual software using the "Check for Updates" method, you can get the latest federal program update here:

  1. Close TurboTax and all other programs except this browser window.
  2. Click here to download the 189 MB update.
  3. Save the update file to your Windows desktop.
  4. Double-click the update file w_perrelsuperpatch... on your desktop to install the manual update.

I am having a similar but new to me problem.  The updater will not succeed.  Here is a screenshot of the message I receive after every attempt.  I downloaded and installed the patch you had linked from wednesday.

Please help.
