You cannot make changes to a return that is in pending or to a return that has just been accepted.
We do not know if entering the wrong stimulus amount will delay your refund --- or for how long if it does. The IRS has not offered any guidance yet on how they will handle returns that have incorrect stimulus amounts entered. We all just have to wait and see. You are among many people who were confused and entered incorrect stimulus amounts, or who filed early and then received a check.
Can we get an update to this question, did you end up getting your tax return?? I accidentally put the wrong amount in to and would like to know what to do.
Do nothing until the IRS has fully processed your tax return after acceptance. If your return gets rejected, you will be able to fix it and then resubmit it immediately.
First check Get My Payment - Select the button Get My Payment to see if your information is current based on the payments you did receive.
If the IRS does not automatically make the correct adjustments for you then you can amend your tax return to correct it. This will be available March 25th. Form 1040X
I just so happened to also make an error during filing and entering the wrong amount given for the first round of stimulus payments. The IRS adjusted my return for what it was suppose to be but they also sent a notice stating that Federal Filing was not affected by the stimulus payments. I ended up receiving what I would have gotten without making an error. Hope this helps!
Can we have an update on this please? I still haven’t heard anything about it.
It depends.
No, if you entered the wrong amount but the Recovery Rebate Credit is being calculated on your tax return, you do not need to do anything.
Correcting Recovery Rebate Credits on returns already filed
However, if you entered the wrong amount and the Recovery Rebate Credit was not calculated on your tax return, you would need to file an amended return if you determine you were entitled to the credit.
You will need to look at your Form 1040 to determine if the Recovery Rebate Credit was already included in your return. If you claimed the rebate recovery credit, it will show up on Page 2, line 30 of your Form 1040 as the Recovery rebate credit. See the sample form below.
See the link below for instructions on how to print your return after filing to help you determine if you claimed the credit or not.

Hi captainmistake!
So I thought we never received our second payment. When I checked the IRS website, it showed the error message like it did for everyone else that used TurboTax. We did our taxes and entered 0 for the second payment. A couple weeks later I was looking at our account and there it was, $1200 from the IRS. SMH.
Is this similar to your mistake? When did you file your taxes versus when you got the adjusted refund? I’ve tried amending and there’s nowhere to fix this screwup!
Thanks!
Kris
DO NOT file an amended tax return if you entered an incorrect amount for the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit on your tax return. If you entered an amount on line 30 but made a mistake in calculating the amount, the IRS will calculate the correct amount of the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit, make the correction to your tax return and continue processing your return. If a correction is needed, there may be a slight delay in processing your return and the IRS will send you a notice explaining any change made.
To check the status of your refund from your original return, check Where's My Refund?
How long did it take to get your federal return back when you made that mistake. I made the same error an it has been 7 weeks an my return still says processing.
It can take anywhere from a few days to 3 weeks to update and show the status. The 21 days is just an estimated time frame. The IRS began processing returns on 2/12, you may not find a record of it or the website may say that you have put in incorrect information when tracking your federal refund. As your return moves through the system, the status of it will be updated. Since Turbo Tax will not have the status of your refund, continue checking the Where’s My Federal Refund tool for updates. Updates are made daily, usually overnight.

Has anyone had any luck? I filed early February. It was accepted. After four weeks, we determined I entered the wrong amount for stimulus from first round. The lady I spoke with “notated” that on my account and said to call the next week to speak to someone in the “errors” department. That was four weeks ago. Never got a letter. Could never get through to the IRS again after calling hundreds of times. No return. Still says processing. So it’s been two months since I filed with no answer, no return, and no letter from IRS. Anyone have any idea why??? Why they didn’t send a letter, why it would still be processing, and how long it takes the IRS to issue a refund if they make the correction themselves?? Help!!! Single mom here. I am relying on this return!
You would need to contact the IRS directly for answers.
Please click here to contact the IRS. It is best to call as early in the morning as possible, and not on Monday and Tuesdays. @hipeebles.
They do not answer Wednesday through Friday, is there a hotline or status option that taxpayers can utilize? It has been months since I filed my return and all I did was mistakenly add an amount. The check my refund screen still says it is processing. I am counting on this tax return refund!
I have called every day of the week starting at the time the phones open until they close. For the last three weeks, I can’t even get the welcome menu. Just says due to call volume, call can not be completed as dialed. And should you actually get a menu, it then puts you on hold and then tells you to try your call again later. I have called hundreds of times!!!
I have an update for you guys.
I just checked the where’s my refund app and it shows that we should have our refund by April 7th! It does explain that the stimulus amount I entered was incorrect and shows the new refund amount. I will also receive a letter explaining everything, as well.
The first thing I thought to do was come and update everyone that is in the same boat as us. I understand needing this money but just try to be a little patient, and definitely DO NOT amend!!! Good luck everyone!
I just wanted to update my post. My taxes were accepted Feb 12 an I noticed I had made an error on the stimulus section. I just checked the where's my refund app an after 7 weeks of keeping that same we are still processing your taxes it finally showed they fixed my mistake an approved everything. We should be getting ours on April 12th in stated. Hope this helps everyone.
Yes, that is correct. If the an amount that was claimed for the Recovery Rebate Credit is incorrect, the IRS will automatically adjust your refund or amount due.
I have attached a screenshot from the IRS page 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit — Topic G: Correcting issues after the 2020 tax return is filed,
The correct amount of $600 was on line 30. I'm disabled, and fully eligible. The IRS adjusted it to zero and said I miscalculated. The rebate was my only reason to file.
After the days of trying to get through, being transferred all around, they said they were wrong but I had to file a 1040 x with exactly the same info and explain all the above and maybe they would fix it.
So I tried, but the program keeps putting me at a zero refund.
I can't get it to work. So I was going to do paper but where the heck do I enter my recovery rebate credit???
I fell in a horrible crack here, someone please help me out!
I still have no update. Mine was accepted on the 12th too but it still just says it’s processing and no refund date is shown. Seems like everyone I know has had theirs resolved, except me!!!
Don't worry if the monitor goes to zero when amending your return -- this is not unusual.
Basically you are "amending" your return without changing any of the original amounts, since you did include the Recovery Rebate. It sounds like the IRS suggested you file an amended return without changing anything, except including an explanation of what has happened.
The IRS, tax preparers and tax software will not have additional information on refund dates, so the IRS tool, Where’s My Refund? remains the best way to check the status of your refund. Where’s My Refund? is only updated once daily, usually overnight, so you don’t need to check the status more often.
The thing is - when I did speak to someone over a month ago, they “thought” that was the error but weren’t sure if there was another error. She told me to call back that following Monday and speak to someone in the errors department. That was over a month ago. I try calling every day and check status online every day. Online never changes. And when I call, on the rare chance I get someone, the call disconnects as soon as they pick back up after placing me on hold again to pull up my account. So I have no idea what is going
on. I’ve gotten no letters, no update change, nothing. So I have no idea what is going on with my return. Everyone I know has gotten a resolution or a return date. I just want to know what’s going on. If that’s the only error. If I need to send something or amend. It’s been weeks of not knowing anything.
No. If your only error is entering or not entering a correct stimulus payment the IRS definitely does NOT want an amendment. See the FAQs in the link below.
This year has brought challenges. The IRS is required to reconcile the tax returns and stimulus payments as well as working on the third stimulus payments due to the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). With the tax season and the changes taking place all at once, a delay should be expected for full payments. They want to be diligent and are required to follow any protocols they have been issued. They will make any adjustments and additional payments as they complete the process
FINALLY got through to someone at IRS after they disconnected my first call after being on hold for over an hour. She said they will send a letter out dated 04/19 (two weeks from now), and the hold on the return would drop seven days after that.
HI! I have the same situation as you. Single mom here too. And made a mistake on the first stimulus I've received. Until now my tax return still says " your refund is still being process" I've filled last Feb 12 and accepted by the IRS on Feb 13, and until now no letter or rejection. Let's keep praying and hoping that we'll received our refund too. I'm sad by this too.. :(
