I did not receive my Federal refund? How long I can get the refund?

It shows my federal refund date is 03/06/2021, but I still did not receive my federal refund. So how long I could get my federal refund?

FROM THE IRS:

https://www.irs.gov/refunds

Please note that the IRS says its own system is lagging and you do not need to call the IRS about your refund.

https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/

TurboTax gives you an estimated date for receiving your refund based on a 21 day average from your date of acceptance, but it can take longer.  Many refunds are taking longer during the pandemic.

First, check your e-file status to see if your return was accepted:

https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/

 If accepted, they try to process it within three weeks but it can be longer.  if you have earned income credit or additional child tax credit, it will be at least the end of February before you see your refund, due to the PATH act that requires that they hold your refund longer.

Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control.  TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.

You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount  (line 34of your 2020 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:

https://www.irs.gov/refunds

To track your state refund:

https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1901548-why-do-some-refunds-take-longer-than-others

If you chose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund, that will take some extra time, while the third party bank handles the refund processing.

Using the federal site, "Where's my refund", they tell me my info is not correct. How can that be? It came directly off of my return done by you.

I did not even receive my 2020 tax refund. I filed an extension and filed taxes in Sept 2021 but still it has been over 8 months. So those who are worried about 2021 refunds, there is still time.

Federal and state refunds come from completely separate entities,  There is no rule as to which one will come first or how much time there will be between their arrivals.

@awesome1

TurboTax does not get any information at all from the IRS after you file your tax return.  No one at TurboTax knows what the IRS is doing with your return.

The IRS refund site is not showing information now for 2020 refunds.  It is only showing 2021 refund information, so if you try to track a 2020 refund it will tell you there is no information.

There have been a lot of delays for 2020  federal refunds.  Did you mail your return or e-file?

If you mailed it:

MAILED RETURNS

If  you mail a tax return (or a payment) to the IRS, it is a good idea to use a mailing service that will track it like UPS or certified mail so you will know it was received.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.

TurboTax will not know anything about your mailed return, and will continue to show “Ready to Mail” on your account.  TurboTax will not know that you put your tax return in an envelope and took it to a mailbox.  TurboTax does not get updates on mailed  (or e-filed) returns.

The IRS refund site is only showing information about 2021 refunds now so it will not show anything about your 2020 refund.

Or......

Did you e-file?  Did you click a big orange button that said “Transmit my returns now?”

When you e-file your federal return you will receive two emails from TurboTax.  The first one will say that your return was submitted.  The second email will tell you if your federal return was accepted or rejected.  If you e-filed a state return, there will be a third email to tell you if the state accepted or rejected your state return.

Does your TT account say that your return was accepted?  Or does it say something else—like “rejected”, “printed” or “ready to mail?”  If it does not say accepted then it was not filed unless you put it in an envelope yourself and mailed it.

 TurboTax does not mail your tax return for you.

If your e-file was accepted:

If you chose to have your fees deducted from your federal refund:

Santa Barbara Tax Products Group, LLC  (SBTPG) is the bank that handles the Refund Processing Service when you choose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your refund. This option also has an additional charge from the bank that processes the transaction.

You can contact them SBTPG, toll-free, at 1-877-908-7228 or go to their secure website www.sbtpg.com

@Weinerz2 You have added on to a long thread full of posts from other users.   You have not mentioned what refund you are talking about, when or how you filed----whether by e-file or mail.   Provide some details.

@xmasbaby0

I have posted on this thread last year regarding not receiving the federal refund for the year 2020. The status is still the same - no communication from IRS regarding my federal refund. I have received the refund from 2021 year pretty quickly (within 2 weeks). Is IRS still backlogged for year 2020? What should be my next course of action? Thanks.

@awesome1   You need to call the IRS and see if they got your 2020 return.   Did you use the Online version and efile it?  Was it accepted?  Did you check the status?   When you efile you get back 2 emails. The first email only confirms the transmission. The second email says if the IRS (or state) Accepted or Rejected your efile.

When you log into your account you should also see the status and if it was Accepted or Rejected, Started, Printed, Ready to Mail, etc. What does it say?

Get a Transcript from the IRS to see if you filed and if they sent your refund.

@VolvoGirl

Yes, the return was accepted in Sept 2021 and I received email confirmation. September through December 2021, the online status said the return is still being processed. Starting Jan 2022, the status changed to "information not available" likely because a new tax year started.

All I see is the following at the IRS website which is not very helpful. There is also no phone number to talk to an agent for returns prior to 2022.

We cannot provide any information about your refund. Be sure to:

  • verify your filing date;

  • check with your tax preparer or tax software provider; or

  • verify you received your electronically filed acknowledgement e-mail.

If you filed a complete and accurate tax return, your refund should be issued within 21 days of the received date. However, processing may take longer under certain circumstances.

Please read the following information related to your tax situation:

@awesome1 Call the IRS using their main number for information regarding your 2020 federal tax refund -

Call the IRS: 1-800-829-1040 hours 7 AM - 7 PM local time Monday-Friday
When calling the IRS do NOT choose the first option re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.
So after first choosing your language, then do NOT choose Option 1 (refund info). Choose option 2 for "personal income tax" instead.
Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
Then press 3 "for all other questions."
Then press 2 "for all other questions."
- When it asks you to enter your SSN or EIN to access your account information, don't enter anything.
- After it asks twice, you will get another menu.

Press 2 for personal or individual tax questions.
Then press 3 for all other inquiries
It should then transfer you to an agent.
