Can I e-file my 2019 amended return with TurboTax Online?

According to https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tips/amend-return/how-to-file-an-amended-return-with-the-irs/L6kO691J8
Beginning with the 2019 tax year, you can e-file amended tax returns.

It says here that it works for 2020: https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/amending/help/how-do-i-amend-my-turbotax-online-return/00/27577

I do not see any option to do so in TurboTax Online for 2019.

You would have to go into the 2019 TurboTax software and pull up the original return to amend the 2019 federal return.

You would have to use the 2020 TurboTax software to pull up the original filed return to amend it.

To amend your 2019 return:

  1. Open the return you want to amend in your TurboTax software program.
  2. Make sure your return is exactly as it was when you originally filed it.
    • If you made changes after you filed, undo them. We suggest comparing your onscreen numbers with a paper copy of your filed return.
  3. Now, make an "amend" copy your return by selecting Save As (Mac: select Duplicate) from the File menu. This preserves the originally-filed return.
    •  Name the copy to distinguish it from the original, like 2019 Amended Smith B Form 1040 Return.
  4. You should now be working inside the copy you'll be amending. Inside your program, search for amend and then click the Jump to link.
  5. Select Continue on the We'll help you change (amend) your return screen.
  6. On the following screen, Did you already file your return? select Yes, I've already filed my return and then select I need to amend my 2019 return. Select Continue and then carefully follow the instructions to amend.
    • Don't worry if your refund meter drops to 0; this is normal. Your calculations will come out correctly in the end.
  7. Finish and file your amendment according to the instructions. You can e-file your 2019 amended federal tax return, but most states require amendments to be printed and filed by mail.
  8. If e-filing, you’ll review, sign and transmit your federal return. If not, we'll give you instructions to print and mail your amended return.

3 weeks after mailing your amended federal return, you can start tracking it at the IRS Where's My Amended Return? site. Allow at least 16 weeks for the IRS to process your amended return.

Are you saying that I can amend my 2019 return through the 2020 software? I have a Mac and filed through the software / download version. Please verify.

Thank you!

That is correct. Follow the steps above by @gloriah5200.

I don't think do.  You need to amend a 2019 return with the 2019 program.  The 2020 amended return won't be ready until March 25.  Maybe when it is you can also efile an Amended 2019 return too.

The Mac 2019 version does not currently have a “Jump to” link like the Microsoft version does.
thank you though.

Thank you Forrest and Gloria.

I will download the 2020 software tomorrow and check it out. Hopefully I can do the 2019 amendment immediately.

Hello @gloriah5200

This has been a frustrating process - you gave me some hope - but it was unfounded. I downloaded the 2020 version of TurboTax today and went in to amend my 2019 return. I made sure to have my 2019 Taxes, which were filed with TurboTax, ready. I clicked the amend option and it asked if I wanted to amend a 2020 return, a 2019 return, or a previous year... I chose 2019... it took me to this page where it sadly told me..

I do have the 2019 version and I spent over an hour on the phone with a TurboTax associate last week trying to figure out how to do it. She has not gotten back to me with a solution, so I was excited by your post. Please update it to properly educate people.

It seems as if the Tech team at TurboTax has done a software update for amending 2019 taxes in the 2019 version for WINDOWS, but not for MACS :(
So now I have to decide if I wait for the Tech team or mail it in - not sure which will be faster at this point. Other things in my life are waiting for me to amend this - or I wouldn't be so frustrated.

I think I said that above.  You need to amend using the same year program.  But yeah the jump to search is tricky to use.  If it isn't working on your Mac 2019 program, then open your return and it may say Amend on the first screen.  Or maybe it will be before you open your return.  Go to File-Open and before clicking on your return see if it says Amend somewhere.

Or after you open your return and make a Duplicate like the Amend FAQ says, go to

Federal Taxes or Personal (Deskop H&B)

The e-file is not available for the windows version of 2019 either.  At the end it says its available and to click the file tab but there is no file tab sadly.

This was brand new last year and we did not know when or if prior year amended returns would be allowed thru the TT system and we still don't know if it will ever be allowed even when the 2020 amendments are allowed later this month.

@SForrestLO  and @gloriah5200 and @VolvoGirl

I found it!!! I Found it!!!!!

oh my goodness!!!!!

SO - this was accessed on the Mac 2019 Download TurboTax.... by double clicking on the "Search Topics" icon... NOT the "Search" icon which is where I searched before!!!

This is a fine distinction- but it is so important!

There are two search functions in the program!!!!

I have not completed the process, but it does seem to be working.

Thank you all for helping!

Stop trying to e-file a 2019 return.   Only a tax pro with professional tax software can e-file an amended 2019 return.   Print it, sign it and date it in ink, and mail it.

Do not expect  quick results from amending.

Even during “normal” times it takes about four months for the IRS to process an amended return.  During the pandemic and due to the severe backlog at the IRS it is taking much longer—six months or more for many amended returns.  Do not expect quick results from amending.  When the IRS issues a refund for an amended return it will be by check.  They do not make direct deposits for refunds for amended returns.  You can watch for information here:

You cannot e-file an amended 2019 tax return after Oct 15, 2020.    The IRS servers were taken down then to get ready for 2020 tax returns filed in 2021.

Only professional software can still amend online because that uses a different server.

VolvoGirl:  I clicked the link on how to file an amended 2019 with the desktop version, and I got this message:                  "You do not have sufficient privileges for this resource or its parent to perform this action.

Click your browser's Back button to continue."

I weirdly can't figure out how to "search" in TT 2019 Home & Business, to find the "amend" section to "walk me through it."  I CAN find and open the 1040X, but apparently can't do the "step-by-step" to complete it.  :(

The last link doesn't work, says I don't have privileges to open it, even though I'm signed in.

You kindly stated:

     4.  You should now be working inside the copy you'll be amending. Inside your program, search

for amend and then click the Jump to link.

I'm using Windows downloaded TT Home and Business 2019, and I've used Turbo Tax for YEARS... but I can find any way to search, nor any way to find anything about "amending" a return, and no "jump to" link.  :(

I CAN find the FORM 1040X, open it, and it DOES have the information in Column A, but for this unusual task, I'd love to have the "step-by-step," but can't seem to get there.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!
