Amendment filing after "acceptance" or "approval" by the IRS?

I filed my taxes on April 6, 2026. I now need to file an amendment to include an additional 1099-INT.

When following TurboTax’s instructions, they say to wait for the return to be accepted by the IRS.

When I go to the IRS’s website, it shows it has indeed been accepted, but not approved. I suspect they just haven’t gotten around to reviewing what is undoubtedly a complex filing by my estimation.

I believe I’m in the clear because my return was accepted, but a part of me wonders if I have to (or should) wait for it to first be approved, so that it doesn’t layer on an additional complexity?

Can someone chime in on two questions:

  1. Is it okay to go ahead and file an amendment?
  2. Should I wait to file the amendment for any reason?

generally it’s better to wait until the original tax return is APPROVED.  But I caveat that:

    1. if you are due a refund, certainly wait to amend until the refund hits your bank account.  IT’ll otherwise confuse the IRS.
    2. if you are NOT waiting on a refund, really no reason not to submit the amendment (or at least pay the tax that the amendment is generating, so that any interest clock is stopped.
    3. The IRS cares more about the money than the paperwork, so if you are not due a refund and will owe tax due to the 1099-INT, just go ahead and submit the payment and amendment now. if it creates IRS confusion, at least you are not waiting on money from the IRS and you are not waiting to pay with an interest clock running.
    4. BTW, how much are we talking about on the 1099-INT?.  Many 1099-INTs can be quite small and the IRS may not care.

Wait for the original tax return to be approved and the federal tax refund sent before you amend the tax return.

You need to wait since the IRS may change your return before it is approved and you need to enter the exact amount of your refund that you received from the IRS on the amended tax return.

Thank you both for your input here. Makes complete sense to pay first considering I knew I would owe it - that reduces any potential penalties/fees they may impose later.

NCperson - to answer you, it was somewhat meaningful, but under $1,000, so I had to report it but the penalties/fines they may apply will still likely be minimal.
