Whenever I try to open my return from 2023, I get an error message that says, There is no application set to open the document “TurboTaxReturn-2.tax2023. "

To open a *.tax2023 data file do you have the 2023 desktop software installed on your Mac computer?    If so, how are you trying to launch it?

The only type of return document that can be opened without the corresponding TurboTax software would be a PDF file.

I do not know how to tell if I have the 2023 desktop software installed on my Mac. I just look up TurboTax on safari and when I click to the document it downloads. I cannot open it in the download folder. 

You do not know how to look at your Mac and see what programs are installed?   Have you tried clicking on Finder and then clicking on Applications?

I do not have a turbo tax app on my doc or in my applications. I just use safari to look up the turbo tax website. 

Then you do not have desktop software.  It seems you have been using online software.   You need to go to your online account to get to your tax return.

 

 

  You have to access your own account and/or  print it for yourself using exactly the same account and user ID that you used when you prepared the return.

 

Start a 2024 return online and enter some personal information  so that the menu on the left opens up and lets you access your past year returns.

Many people have multiple TT accounts and forget how to access them.  Log out of the account you are in now.

Or did you use the desktop version of TurboTax?  If so, the files are on your own hard drive or any backup device you used like a flash drive.

SAVE YOUR TAX RETURNS !

 

EVERY year before mid-October you should save a copy of your tax return as a pdf and print a copy of it for your records.  That way you will not be searching online frantically when you need it for a lender, FAFSA forms, your next tax return, etc.
